A Clinical Observation in Patients with Leukemia and Pregnancy

Abstract
Since acute leukemia by itself is not common. the association of this disease with
pregnancy is inevitably rare. nevertheless, the application of modern treatment, which
can result in remission of the disease, the coexistence of the two conditions creates
special clinical problems. Presenter here, a clinical observation in 27 patients with
leukemia and pregnancy. The results obtained were as the follows ;
1) The maternal age was predominant in 25¡­30 years with the mean age of 29.
2) The type of leukemia was acute myelogenous in 51.7% of all cases ; 80% in the
group of leukemia in pregnancy and 42% in the group of pregnancy in leukemia.
3) Diagnosis of leukemia was made in 12 cases before conception (pregnancy in
leukemia) and 15 cases during pregnancy or shortly after delivery (leukemia in
pregnancy).
4) Outcome of fetus were viable delivery in 8 (30%), abortion in 7 (26%), and dead
baby delivery in 2 (7%) leases. Ten cases (37%) were considered to be terminated with
maternal death in 12¡­28 weeks of gestation.
5) For maternal outcome, 12 were dead and 3 in complete remission. Causes of death
in 7 were infection in 4, hemorrhage in 2 and meningeal leukemia in 1.
